Happy Day of Sofia, The Divine City!

Happy day of Sofia! On September 17 Bulgaria’s capital celebrates St. Sofia Day – the date when the Orthodox world pays homage to the Holy Martyrs Sofia and her three daughters Faith, Hope and Charity (though their Bulgarian names would translate as Faith, Hope and Love). The Day of Sofia – September 17th or April 3rd? In 1992 the Sofia municipal council selected this date for Sofia’s Day at the proposal of the mayor. Between 1979 and 1992 locals would celebrate Sofia’s Day on the 3rd of April – the day when Sofia became Bulgaria’s capital back in 1879. However, the city got its current name somewhere around the 14th century from the early Byzantine basilica Saint Sophia (from the Greek Ἁγία Σοφία, Hagia Sophia, meaning “Holy Wisdom”). During the middle ages the church was the most visible structure that in the vicinity city. It was usually the first thing a lot of people would see whenever they would approach. That made a lot of them associate it with the […]

Ultimate Adventures in Bulgaria

“If you’re bored in Bulgaria, you’re bored of life.” Right? That’s what the Ultimate Triptrotter Yolanda Clatworthy wrote in a blog article and showed in a movie about her stay in Bulgaria. Free Sofia Tour became part of the adventures of the Ultimate Triptrotter. Yolanda went on a month-long Europe trip by winning a video competition by Triptrotting. Of course, Bulgaria was part of her trip and of course, Free Sofia Tour was part of her visit here. As a triptrotter, I was her host here in Sofia. I am only sad that I was quite busy and couldn’t spend more time with her because she is tons of fun. Thanks for the great time, Yolanda and for the great materials about Bulgaria.   Check out also what Yolanda wrote about Bulgaria: Ultimate Adventures: Bored in Bulgaria? Triptrotting is a personalized matching engine that connects travelers with like-minded locals online to facilitate an offline meeting, and provides relevant travel recommendations.  The Triptrotting network gives travelers a far less “touristy” travel experience […]

Plovdiv Night of Museums and Galleries 2011

Plovdiv is a very good place for a one-day trip or a city break from Sofia. If you happen to be in the region on 17th of September, you might also want to stay for the night. Because it’s going to be a long night… of sightseeing and fun. More than 6 hours of cultural output, 68 locations, 3 main programs, numerous exhibitions, concerts, performances, demonstrations and children’s events. More on their website and the whole schedule in a convenient booklet. A good idea may be to stay in Sofia during the day for the celebrations during the Day of St. Sophia (which as of 1992 is the official day of the city) and then maybe head to Plovdiv in the evening. By the way, the Bulgarian capital Sofia participated this year in the 7th edition of the European Night of Museums on 14th of May with over 40 other European countries. P.S. Check out the Euronews video presenting Plovdiv on our Youtube channel or read about the city in the recent […]

Charity tour 2

Last month we decided to join an initiative to give a helping hand to support 51 children in the orphanage in Doganovo village near Sofia. The donations that we collected during the morning tour went for new sport shoes for the kids. We thought that it would be a good idea to make this a regular event. So, every 6th of the month donations of both our morning and evening tours would go to charity. We were thinking long if we should even write this post because we don’t want to brag or something. However, we decided that writing about this idea would be better than keeping it quiet for two reasons – our guests could see that they participated in a great initiative and in the meantime we might encourage others to do similar projects. After the evening tour on the 6th of September it became obvious that I should write this. People decided to join our tour and this way support the children at Doganovo (which they realised […]

Article about Sofia in Qatar Airways magazine

Free Sofia Tour was recommended by the inflight magazine of Qatar Airways – Oryx. The airline is about to start regular flights to Bulgaria’s capital on 14th of September. They decided to mark this occasion by including an article about Sofia and Bulgaria in their August 2011 edition. Read the whole article in English (pages 46-50) or some highlights from it here: Qatar Airways‘ latest destination is the ancient, enigmatic Bulgarian capital. (page 1) You can see all of Sofia’s main sights with a free, English-speaking walking tour, leaving twice daily from the Palace of Justice. (page 48) In Sofia, things are always happening: maybe quickly, often quietly, underground, or out of sight. (page 48) Such unexpected encounters are part of the daily life in this often-underestimated capital. Too many still associate Bulgaria with strict Communism, Olympic goldmedals in weightlifting, and (more recently) cheap holiday properties. Yet there’s much more to the country and its people. (page 48) Plovdiv’s atmospheric old town, a network of cobblestoned streets lined with art galleries, […]

Bulgaria’s Unification Day

What is Unification Day? Bulgaria celebrates Unification Day on September 6th. This is the anniversary of the unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and the autonomous Ottoman province of Eastern Rumelia, which took place on September 6th, 1885.   Why did Bulgaria need to unify? At the end of the 14th century, Bulgaria became a part of the Ottoman Empire through conquest. While there were quite a lot of uprisings, an organized liberation movement really emerged in the 19th century, influenced by the ideas of the Enlightenment, humanism and nationalism. The activities of this movement culminated in a massive revolt in April 1876. The Ottoman authorities successfully put down the rebellion. However, media reports about the accompanying atrocities caused an outrage in societies across Europe and North America. This led to a war between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. The war ended on March 3rd, 1878, which Bulgarians celebrate as their Liberation Day. In those days, however, nothing in Europe happened without the consent of the Great Powers. They held […]

English fans sightseeing in Sofia

Free Sofia Tour welcomed part of the 3000+ English soccer fans that were expected to arrive in Bulgaria’s capital to see the game between the two countries’ teams tonight. Our walking tour was recommended by the British Embassy here in Sofia and included in the FSF’s England fanzine, Free Lions, produced and distributed at England away games. We are also part of leaflet for the game of the the official supporters club (Englandfans). In order to give our guests a better welcome, we provided flyers for the Fans’ Embassy and additional volunteers were waiting for them at our usual spot. As you know, we like to keep the groups smaller. That’s why yesterday (01.09) at 6PM there were 4 people with Free Sofia Tour badges at the start. This morning at 11AM, there were again 4 volunteers that split our 80+ guests into four separate groups. Until the end of the weekend, there would be at least two people expecting more guests from England and not only. Our “regular” group this […]
