Free Sofia Tour

The Kids from Doganovo Visiting Plovdiv

In October on a sunny Saturday we decided to take our young friends from Doganovo to a short trip. All 45 children and their teachers took a specially arranged for them bus and traveled for an hour from Doganovo to Plovdiv – the second largest city in Bulgaria. Several of our volunteers from Sofia and Plovdiv greeted them in the city downtown and all headed to the cozy pizza restaurant Godzila to have lunch before going for a stroll in old town Plovdiv. The lunch menu included delicious parlenki (type of flat bread), baked potato casseroles, and pizzas – all children’s favorites! Moreover, everyone got very excited when the manager of the pizza place surprised us with a gift from the restaurant – a large piece of cake for everyone! Once everyone’s tummies were full, it was time to meet with the guides from Free Plovdiv Tour and learn more about the city’s rich history. The tour started from the Ancient Stadium and Dzhumaya Mosque. The group then headed to […]

Guided Bucharest Free Tour

As announced, we have started a series of blog posts about all the tours in the UEFT network. Last month we presented Budapest. This month we have our neighbours on the list – our Romanian friends from Guided Bucharest Tours. There are only two NGOs in the United Europe Free Tours network – our 365 Association and the Association behind Guided Bucharest. This made our friendship very close very quickly since we share both similar challenges and common values. Their free walking tour runs every day at 11 AM. However, in the spring there will be a change in the schedule – 2 tours a day at 10 AM and at 6 PM. Just like Sofia, Bucharest is a four seasons destination! Neither sun, nor rain, nor snow can prevent the tours from being as entertaining and exciting as they are.         Besides the walking tour, Bucharest also has its bike trip which goes through 5 different parks and visits various places of interest. The bike trips require a […]

Meet our Friends from Trip to Budapest

Free Sofia Tour is not the only free walking tour in Europe. Actually, some time ago we presented to you our informal network of free tours in Europe: United Europe Free Tours. In a series of blog posts, we are going to present to you our UEFT friends from the different countries. Let’s start with a Trip to Budapest 🙂 The organization is family run and started with the tours in 2007. It’s one of the first independent free walking tour organizations in Europe. Tours leave daily at 10:30AM and 2:30PM from the Vörösmarty Square (tér). The meeting point is at the lion fountain – final stop of the M1 yellow line. The tour lasts for about 2.5 hours and covers about 3.5 kilometers.     All guides are local so the tour includes a lot of fun stories and local anecdotes. The guides are extremely knowledgeable, but don’t expect history lessons 🙂 You will also hear a lot about Hungarian customs, language (which is veeeery veeeery peculiar and difficult to learn!), cuisine, […]

World Refugee Day

Since 2001, by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, June 20 has been celebrated as World Refugee Day, coinciding with the African Refugee Day. Here in Bulgaria we host plenty of refugees and asylum seekers since we are an outer border of the EU. For the last ten years, on average, 1000 people per year have been filing an application for such a status. Most of them flee their countries of origin for political reasons. They are all looking for a peaceful place to settle down and quite a few of them recognize Bulgaria as such. Since February 2013, our Association together with the guides from Free Sofia Tour have been actively involved in showing our capital to the people applying for a refugee status, thus contributing to brightening up their everyday lives. This way we hope that no matter outcome of their application, they will all treasure the good memory of our country. The first tour with refugees and asylum seekers took place in February of this year and was led in […]
