Free Sofia Tour – Now 3 times a day!

Great news for the early birds! From the 1st of May Free Sofia Tour will have one more starting hour – 10:00 am, every single day! Spring is here. And since we’ve already taken our Martenitsas off but wanted to keep celebrating, we decided to add a new daily Free Sofia Tour starting hour! For those of you who are highly impatient to meet us and can’t wait until 11:00 am, we added a third starting hour to our tours – 10:00 am every morning, same place as always. We know very well how precious time is when you are visiting a new city for just a couple of days and we wanted to help you make the most of it while you’re here, so… this is the result! We are happy to announce that from the 1st of May until the 31st of October we will wait for you in front of the Palace of Justice not once, not twice, but three times per day – 10:00 am, 11:00 am, 18:00 pm. So if you decide to join the Free Sofia […]

Guided Bucharest Free Tour

As announced, we have started a series of blog posts about all the tours in the UEFT network. Last month we presented Budapest. This month we have our neighbours on the list – our Romanian friends from Guided Bucharest Tours. There are only two NGOs in the United Europe Free Tours network – our 365 Association and the Association behind Guided Bucharest. This made our friendship very close very quickly since we share both similar challenges and common values. Their free walking tour runs every day at 11 AM. However, in the spring there will be a change in the schedule – 2 tours a day at 10 AM and at 6 PM. Just like Sofia, Bucharest is a four seasons destination! Neither sun, nor rain, nor snow can prevent the tours from being as entertaining and exciting as they are.         Besides the walking tour, they also has its bike trip which goes through 5 different parks and visits various places of interest. The bike trips require a […]

Meet our Friends from Trip to Budapest

Free Sofia Tour is not the only free walking tour in Europe. Actually, some time ago we presented to you our informal network of free tours in Europe: United Europe Free Tours. In a series of blog posts, we are going to present to you our UEFT friends from the different countries. Let’s start with a Trip to Budapest 🙂 The organization is family run and started with the tours in 2007. It’s one of the first independent free walking tour organizations in Europe. Tours leave daily at 10:30AM and 2:30PM from the Vörösmarty Square (tér). The meeting point is at the lion fountain – final stop of the M1 yellow line. The tour lasts for about 2.5 hours and covers about 3.5 kilometers.     All guides are local so the tour includes a lot of fun stories and local anecdotes. The guides are extremely knowledgeable, but don’t expect history lessons 🙂 You will also hear a lot about Hungarian customs, language (which is veeeery veeeery peculiar and difficult to learn!), […]

List of Free Walking Tours around the World

Free Sofia Tour didn’t invent the wheel. Other cities around the world had started free walking tours so in August 2010 we decided it was high time that Sofia joined. It was only logical that we would contact other tours to exchange info, ideas and know-how. An informal network was created and soon the idea of the common flyer came up: We present you – United Europe Free Tours. (Link to their website here) In other words – if you are travelling to Barcelona, Berlin, Bratislava, Bucharest, Budapest, Ceski Krumolov, Lisbon, Ljubjana , London, Madrid, Prague or San Sebastian   make sure you don’t miss the tours organized by our great friends there. A click on the name of the city in the text would send you to their websites for more information. These are the best free tours in terms of quality and entertainment. Just look at their testimonials and rankings on TripAdvisor provided by the users that already had the pleasure of joining any of the United Europe Free Tours. No booking is required. Just […]

Free Plovdiv Tour celebrates 6 months

In the past 6 months the Bohemian beauty and the historical treasures of Plovdiv were taken as memories to 57 countries. Over 700 people left their footsteps on the streets where once Thracians, Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians and Ottomans proudly left theirs. 130 tour groups had the chance to get a true Plovdiv experience – to meet in front of the Post Office, to greet the chess-players in the City Garden, to sit on the Buttons, to whisper a wish in Miljo’s ear, to check the time on the Sun Clock, to wave to Alyosha and to see the sunset from Nebet Tepe. Ten guides aged 17-26 shared their city with many new friends from all over the world. The guests came mainly from Australia, USA, Germany, France and the UK but there were also visitors from Uruguay, Tasmania, Singapore, Tajikistan and South Korea and many other distant countries! There were several challenges, that the project and its team had to face within those 6 months. The first tours started the […]

Free city tours

The family of free walking city tours around the world is growing constantly. The list reached 91 and I am sure there may be more that we don’t know of. The latest editions come from three different continents – Seattle Free Tours, Free Tour Seoul and Cape Town Free Tours. Some of these tours are daily, some happen couple of days per week, while others run only on special occasions like the San Fermín Free Tour during the festivities in Pamplona in Spain. Why would you join a “free” city tours and where’s the catch? There’s no catch. Most of the tours are led by enthusiastic guides that love their cities. It’s mostly locals with very good English. As you can imagine, they know a lot more than guide books and are not afraid to share a personal insight or a secret story. The guides usually try to make the tour fun, not just history but entertainment without being shallow. The tour is usually every day (sometimes even twice a day), at a fixed time, no […]

Free Varna Tour says goodbye to season 2012

It has already been 6 months from the very start of the project Free Varna Tour, the second big project of Free Sofia Tour Association. The biggest challenge of this project was to break up the well-established stereotype that there are almost no English- speaking guests visiting Varna. Well, it’s been six months now – six months during which the guides of Free Varna Tour have managed to show our sunny city to almost 1500 guests from all over world. Key achievements of Free Varna Tour can be summarized into: 1500 guests from 70 countries and 6 continents. Top 5 foreign countries visiting the tour were Germany, UK, France, USA and Spain. However, there were visitors from a lot of “exotic” countries such as Peru, Chile, Singapore, South Africa and New Zealand! Around 270 tour groups. There were babies and grandparents, families and backpackers, even disabled people. The tour became No 1 attraction in Varna on Trip Advisor with 10 reviews and not a single negative one! More than 500 Facebook […]

Free Plovdiv Tour starts now from 2 PM

October came, autumn is here and the day is now shorter. Therefore, Free Plovdiv Tour decided to move the starting time – the tour will now start at 2PM. This will enable the guests to enjoy the city at daylight and – since tour is ending in the old town – to visit any museums of their choice after the tour. The second biggest city in Bulgaria – Plovdiv – is a pretty good option for a day trip outside of Sofia. Beside Free Plovdiv Tour, Plovdiv offers a lot of variety when it comes to sightseeing, culture, restaurants and little shops, so it could cater for all kinds of interests. Buses leave from the Central Bus Station every hour, trains are also available, or you can rent a car.
