April Charity Tour with Dreams Unlimited

As you may know, every 6th of the month donations from both our morning and evening tours would go for the so called Social Program of our Association. With the greatest part of the donations we are supporting the social home for disadvantaged children in the village of Doganovo near Sofia. We have bought various presents for them – sports shoes, special equipment for horse riding for the youngest kids, for Christmas we have organized a tour around Sofia, with dinner and theater performance afterwards, for the summer vacation we have invited them to Sofia Film Festival. One other project – part of the Social Program – is in cooperation with the teenagers from the social workshop Dreams Unlimited. The main goal of this workshop is to integrate children from various vulnerable groups and prepare them for the professional life. Кое ще бъде новото име на Фрий София Тур?

Сдружението ни ще си има ново име! До края на тази седмица тече вътрешно гласуване за “балотаж” между двата фаворита (по-надолу може да прочетете как избрахме тези две имена). Вие също можете да се включите, за да видим дали мислим еднакво: [socialpoll id=”6645″] “Прекръстването” на сдружението ни се наложи, тъй като вече не ни е удобно да казваме, че сдружение “Фрий София Тур” прави обиколки на Пловдив и Варна. Освен това реализираме и други проекти в областта на културата и туризма, които не са свързани с обиколки. Not only the beach and the sun is waiting for you – the new season of Free Varna Tour is also starting! The first tour will be on Saturday, April 13th. The tours will be again every day, twice a day – at 11 AM and at 6 PM. The meeting point is in front of Varna’s Cathedral. The first season of Free Varna Tour was in 2012. It started in April – on Friday 13th. The primary objective of Free Varna Tour is to make every foreigner feel welcome in Varna and ignite their interest in such a way so that they want to come back and recommend it to others. Free Plovdiv Tour team is expanding – join now!

For the second time Free Sofia Tour Association is looking for locals with a long-term dedication to the first regular free English language sightseeing walking tours in Plovdiv! The walking tours will be organized in the way they exist in almost all big European cities, including Sofia and Varna. Free Plovdiv Tour started on Friday, 13th July 2012 and has achieved a lot during the first few months. Kukeri – a living pagan tradition

The custom of kukeri going out on the streets of various Bulgarian towns is an old pagan tradition kept alive through the centuries. The first written evidence for it dates back to the 6th century. The Kukeri are in fact people who dress up in eccentric costumes sometimes resembling animals but on many occasions not resembling anything familiar at all. In addition, they have large copper bells attached to themselves. With their scary appearance and the loud sounds of their bells they are meant to scare away the evil spirits. You could enjoy festivals with kukeri at various times throughout the year all around Bulgaria even though the custom is most common in Southeast and Southwest Bulgaria. Most typically, it is held either around Christmas or during Sirni Zagovezni (a holiday celebrated 7 weeks prior to Easter). Grandma March, or Baba Marta in Bulgarian, is one of the most ancient traditions in Bulgaria. With this in mind, our young friends from the Social Workshop Dreams Unlimited decided to surprise us by preparing martenitsas and personalized messages for the guests of Free Sofia Tour! Dreams Unlimited is a project aiming to integrate boys and girls from Bulgarian minorities and from socially disadvantaged families.
