Free Varna Tour – New Volunteers

Free Varna Tour is looking for long-term volunteers for the first regular free English language sightseeing walking tours in the sea capital of Bulgaria – Varna! The walking tours will be organized in the way they exist in almost all big European cities, including Sofia. Free Varna Tour started on Friday, 13th 2012. Summer time – change of clock

On Sunday the 25th we have to move the clocks one hour ahead in order to start the Daylight saving time. Make sure you change your devices or you might be one hour late for the tours that day! You might have to get up an hour early for the 11AM one. Here’s something to make you feel better:

Сдружение “Фрий София Тур” търси дългосрочни доброволци за първата редовна безплатна пешеходна обиколка на Варна на английски език. Туровете ще бъдат организирани по подобие на този в София. Смятаме, че и морската ни столица трябва да се нареди сред европейските градове, в които има подобни безплатни обиколки. Основната цел на нашето сдружение е да накара всеки чужденец да се почуства добре дошъл в България. Освен това искаме да събудим интереса на нашите гости към България по начин, който ще ги накара да се върнат и да препоръчат страната ни на своите приятели. Ние сме млади и ентусиазирани в онова, което правим. Free Sofia Tour Bike

Ever since the beginning of the Free Sofia Tour we have been looking for an option to put a sign at our starting point. This turned out to be an expensive and complicated endeavour. That’s why one of our team members came up with an original idea to mark the beginning of the Free Sofia Tour… A branded bike at the bike stand near the Palace of Justice. So we set off to find a cheap bike. And proved again that everything could be found at Ladies Market in Sofia. It took us 70BGN to buy the bike and 30 more to take it apart in order to paint it and then put it back together. Guess for a price like that we couldn’t have asked for better invoicing… Then the pieces were brought to a friend of ours who managed to paint the whole bike in the colours of the Free Sofia Tour: Next step was to actually brand the bike. Happy Liberation Day (Google Doodle)

Some more information on why Bulgarians celebrate today and what is the biggest holiday in Bulgaria all about 🙂 As for Sofia – it was liberated on 4th of January 1878 and became a capital on 3rd of April 1879. Happy Liberation Day, everyone! Even Google marked today’s holiday:

Baba Marta Google Doodle

Last year even Google put on a Bulgarian martenitsa (doodle). Stories about this cherished tradition of ours are also part of Free Sofia Tour! Interesting is also to understand, what the colors red and white mean. Here’s another point of view. There are actually a number of stories, all intertwining history, legends and beliefs 😉 One thing is common – it’s a very ancient, very Bulgarian and very beautiful tradition!
