Soviet army monument gets new graffiti
June 20, 2011Starting June 18th is the second edition of “Opera In the Park” – a wonderful opportunity to enjoy classical opera and ballet performances in the pleasant ambience of the the Military Academy park, Sofia!
About the Sofia Opera and Ballet
The Sofia Opera and Ballet is one of the oldest and most prestigious cultural institutions in Bulgaria. Its roots go back to 1890, when the first opera company in Bulgaria was founded. The first full opera performance — Pagliacci by Leoncavallo — took place in 1909.
The current building on Knyaz Alexander Dondukov Blvd. 30 is an architectural landmark in itself. Designed in 1921 by architect Lazar Parashkevanov and completed in 1953, the Neo-Classical edifice is known for its stunning acoustics — often compared to some of the best opera houses in Europe, including the Vienna State Opera. The lavishly decorated interior with its grand chandeliers and plush seating is worth a visit even if you’re not catching a show.
Bulgaria has a remarkably strong operatic tradition and has produced world-renowned singers such as Boris Christoff, Nikolai Ghiaurov, Ghena Dimitrova, Raina Kabaivanska, and Krassimira Stoyanova. Attending a performance here — whether indoors or in the park — means experiencing a living tradition that punches well above its weight on the global stage.
