Your guide collects you from your Sofia hotel at 09:00 AM for the 1.5-hour drive to Plovdiv, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities (settled since 4000 BC).
Begin with a 1.5-hour guided walking tour through the historic center: admire the still-used Roman Theatre, remnants of the Roman Stadium, colourful National Revival mansions, and newly excavated 4th-century mosaics. Enjoy the lively Kapana art district and the main pedestrian boulevard—the longest in Europe.
After free time for coffee or snapshots, continue south into the Rhodope Mountains to Asen’s Fortress. Perched high above the Asenitsa River, this medieval stronghold—named for 13th-century Tsar Ivan Asen II—offers commanding views. Explore its restored stone ramparts and the beautifully frescoed Church of the Holy Mother of God.
Return to Sofia in the late afternoon; drop-off around 18:00 – 19:00 depending on traffic and your preferred pace.
Optional audio guides available in Spanish, Italian, German, French, Romanian, Bulgarian, Russian, Chinese, Ukrainian and Portuguese (pre-booking required).
