May 13, 2012The International Plovdiv Airport services the second largest city in Bulgaria. The airport is situated 15 minutes away by car from the city center of Plovdiv. Plovdiv Airport is specialized in servicing charter tourist flights from Moscow, Belfast and Dublin for the Bulgarian alpine resorts during the winter season, from December to April. In this period, Plovdiv airport works intensively, servicing mainly tourists heading towards the ski resorts Bansko, Pamporovo and Borovetz or the spa resorts Velingrad and Hisaria.
In July 2009 a new terminal was opened and now Plovdiv has one of the most modern airports in the country. The new building can service around 1000 passengers per hour, almost half the capacity of the Capital’s airport. The airport has its own parking lot for 50 cars and 20 coaches. The airport also provides coach transport for the passengers of all international companies, since it is used as the back-up airport for Sofia and other airports in Bulgaria.
In November 2010 the Irish airline Ryanair began regular flights (every Tuesday and Saturday) from Plovdiv to the London Stansted Airport. Another regular destination is Frankfurt Haan. The ticket prices run from 27 euro. The airport has recently developed a facebook fan page, where you can find the latest news from the region.
Nearly 16 000 passengers have travelled through the international Plovdiv airport for the last 12 months.
Those were people who flew with the regular airlines from London and Frankfurt, but also were customers of charter flights from Dublin, Belfast and Moscow. This spring negotiations for a new regular link between Plovdiv and Istanbul are to be concluded. Most likely the destination will be serviced by the Turkish low-cost airline Pegasus, and the airplanes will land on “Sabiha Gukchen” airport in Istanbul.
Regular flights from Plovdiv to Frankfurt and London give the passengers a chance to continue to other destinations, the most tempting being Palma de Mallorca and New York. The Ryanair Boeing lands in Stansted (London) at 13:30 and there is a 17:00 flight to New York. In the frame of a couple of hours, from either Stansted or Frankfurt, a connecting flight can be taken to various places in the world.
3 months ago the new terminal of the international Plovdiv airport opened up a Tourist Information Center.
Its objective is to serve passengers to the regions of Southern Bulgaria in the best possible way. At the center or on their website tourists can acquire all information and services relating to their stay in Povdiv or the region. The information center offers travelers free tourist information for cultural landmarks, hotel and transport services, as well as flyers and maps.
At the moment the team of the tourist center is preparing an advertising magazine that will promote Southern Bulgaria as a tourist destination with places of social and cultural significance.
