May 26, 2013The Rhodopes – Where Time Has Stopped
June 3, 2013Coming to Bulgaria, you have probably heard that our beautiful country is also called “the land of roses”. Bulgaria is world number 1 producer of rose oil – from the rare rose type Rosa Damascena. The oil extracted from Rosa Damascena is used as a base element in cosmetics and perfumery all over the world – and ever since the middle ages!
If you are looking for the highest quality of rose oil – you should definitely visit the Bulgarian Valley of Roses 🙂

Gathering the roses is quite labor intensive since it must be done by hand.
There are between twenty to forty days per year suitable for harvesting – usually end of May, beginning of June. During that period, in Kazanlak – the biggest city in the Valley of Roses – you can enjoy the Bulgarian Rose Festival. It includes a lot of art activities, performances and wine tasting.
For a second consecutive year the guests of Sofia landing at Sofia International Airport will be given a welcoming surprise – a fresh Bulgarian rose! This year it is organized on 30th and 31st of May. For the first year the same event will also take place in Burgas – the second largest city at Bulgaria’s seaside.
Bulgarian roses and Free Sofia Tour
Over 20 volunteers from Free Sofia Tour, Sofia Event House, Panicherevo village and other beautiful Bulgarian ladies will contribute to the event – drive to Kazanlak during the night, pick up some baskets of fresh roses and drive back to distribute them to the landing guests! All that to open Bulgaria and its treasures to its foreign visitors. Here are some highlights of last year’s event:

The organizers want this idea to become a tradition for all international airports in Bulgaria during the rose harvesting.

The event has no commercial purpose. The only objective is to promote the fame of the Bulgarian rose and at the same time – the hospitability of the Bulgarians 🙂
