What did Free Sofia Tour give me for the past 3 years?

I am an inspired and motivated guide in a unique organization full of people always eager to keep moving forward with the belief that they are on their way to something magnificent and extraordinary. Being a part of such a team to me does not compare to anything else. It is something you’ve got to feel for yourself. How did everything start? Let’s go backwards. Well, I was at a point in my life when I seemed to have lost direction and I desperately needed a change. I couldn’t imagine anything better than meeting new people not only from Sofia, but from all over the world. Doing it as a volunteer adds even more value, especially if you are the type of person to whom money is just a means and not a final goal. And so it started. There was a lot of hard work: reading and getting ready for an exam as if this is school or university. This exam, though, has nothing to do with familiar exams. […]

The Russian Church in Sofia

One of the most remarkable buildings in Sofia is the Russian church The Russian Church – Famous for its magical power to make wishes come true. It is located in the center of our capital, where the Georgi Rakovski street and Tsar Osvoboditel boulevard cross.  Here are 7 interesting facts about the Russian Chirch: The Russian church Sveti Nikolay Chudotvorets (St. Nicholas the Wonderworker) was built in the period of 1907-1914 on a plot belonging to the Russian embassy. Architecturally the church was designed by Mikhail Preobrazhensky. He was also the architect of the Orthodox temples in Tallinn and Florence. The initial purpose of the church was for it to serve as a private chapel of the Russian embassy to Bulgaria. Later priests of the Russian Orthodox Church started running it and transformed it into a meeting place of the Russian expat community in our country. In 1953 the chapel became a church of the Moscow patriarchate, which manages it to this day. The church has five golden domes with the central one soaring to a height of […]

World in logos (part I: The neighbours)

Recently, our small fatherland became preoccupied with the creation of the new brand and logo of Bulgarian tourism, that’s why our friend Andrey from Tourist Sites of Bulgaria & Andrey-andreev.com decided to take a quick peek into the world of logos. He started with our neighbors. Here’s the original post in Bulgarian. We publish the images, videos together with his commentary: Bulgaria: Discover & Share Click to see the rest of the photos Turkey: “Since I’m not actually a designer, I will only comment on what I know. The red thingy in the logo symbolizes Turkish tulips. The tulip is the national flower not only of the Dutch, but also of the Turks. After all, it is through Turkey that tulips arrived in Europe in the first place.  I suppose some nations find it hard to imagine a country named after a holiday meal, but at least we, Bulgarians, cannot mistake a bird for a state. The slogan of the Turkish logo is “WELCOMES YOU”, and my personal experience is that […]

The Largo – Birdview

During our tour with the Youth Pharmacists Assembly in early November, we had the amazing opportunity to take some awesome birdview pictures of Autumn Sofia – with the kind cooperation of Unicredit Bulbank. Apart from Sofia’s landmarks, a typical birdview of Sofia is represented on the two pictures below – a mixture between temples (the tower of the Catholic Cathedral), spread reddish or brownish roofs, factory chimneys and Communist blocks of flats 🙂

International Plovdiv Airport and Information Center

The International Plovdiv Airport services the second largest city in Bulgaria. The airport is situated 15 minutes away by car from the city center of Plovdiv. Plovdiv Airport is specialized in servicing charter tourist flights from Moscow, Belfast and Dublin for the Bulgarian alpine resorts during the winter season, from December to April. In this period, Plovdiv airport works intensively, servicing mainly tourists heading towards the ski resorts Bansko, Pamporovo and Borovetz or the spa resorts Velingrad and Hisaria. In July 2009 a new terminal was opened and now Plovdiv has one of the most modern airports in the country. The new building can service around 1000 passengers per hour, almost half the capacity of the Capital’s airport. The airport has its own parking lot for 50 cars and 20 coaches. The airport also provides coach transport for the passengers of all international companies, since it is used as the back-up airport for Sofia and other airports in Bulgaria. In November 2010 the Irish airline Ryanair began regular flights (every […]
