Christmas or New Year’s? A Communist Take | Free Sofia Tour

Christmas or New Year’s? A Communist Take

Christmas in Bulgaria during communist times If you have read our 5 Bulgarian Christmas facts and traditions post, you already know how we celebrate Christmas in Bulgaria nowadays. But during the 45 years of Communism in our country (1944 – 1989) things were quite different. The reason: communist countries were officially atheist, so it was seen as completely inappropriate for the regime to celebrate religious holidays. Informally, however, most people would still celebrate secretly at home with their families. So, the communist government had to come up with ideas to discourage the people to celebrate Christmas, Easter and other religious holidays. In this blog post we would talk about… Five ways to discourage celebrating Christmas during the Communist period: The power of TV How do you create a situation where the people would prefer to stay home on Christmas Eve, rather than go to church? Easy! The Communist party came up with the idea to broadcast movies from western countries (the USA, the UK, France, Italy etc.) on the national […]

Our Cozy Christmas Party - Free Sofia Tour Style | Free Sofia Tour

Our Cozy Christmas Party

Our traditional Christmas party It is the event on which current and former members, as well as partners and friends of the Association, meet to celebrate together just before the Christmas holidays. Usually the party is organized by the team of Free Sofia Tour. This year, however, we decided to leave the organization to the team of the Social Awareness Program. Although the Social Awareness Program is just one year younger than our first project Free Sofia Tour, not so many people know about its activities. It is the only project that is not directly involved in tourism and therefore it remains in the shadow. Well this year we decided to put it in focus, present the team and reveal the projects we’re involved into. Our hosts from DaDa Cultural Bar have prepared very special welcome drinks Home-made rum & home-made mulled wine. And the team has prepared ginger X-mas cookies, vegan bonbons & walnut cookies, cheese bites, salty muffins, apple mini-baskets, chocolate lollipops, and baklava – all home-made! Each guest was greeted […]

5 Bulgarian Christmas facts and traditions

It is winter and for the Bulgarians it is the time for celebrations. Back in the day when most of  us were dealing with agriculture and livestock breeding there was a lot of free time during the winter. Back  during that time the winter would start with Dimitrovden  (St Dimitar’s Day) and ends about Gergiovden (St. George’s day).  During the winter we celebrate tons of days dedicated to Saints and name days, as well as Christmas. Christmas is one of the most loved holidays in Bulgaria and a very popular time of the year when families get together. In Bulgaria just like everywhere else around the globe the Cristmas spirit is here and we are ready for celebrating. Here are some of the most popular facts and traditions about Christmas in Bulgaria: 1. We celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December. Bulgarians are mainly Eastern Orthodox, but we follow the Gregorian calender and we have Christmas on the 25th of December. 2. Christmas in Bulgaria lasts three days  starting on […]

The Kids from Shiroka Laka Visiting Sofia

This year the Social Awareness Program started to work with a second home for children without parental care – the home “Katya Vancheva” in village Shiroka Laka. Shiroka Laka is a beautiful village in the Rhodope mountains, about 3 hours away from Sofia. As a first step, our team decided to invite the children to Sofia and to spend a weekend together. The trip was sponsored by the Bulgarian Students’ Organization in Mannheim, Germany – “Bai Ganyo“, which organizes annual charity campaigns supporting children without parental care in Bulgaria.

Private Kangoo Jump Tour

За български кликнете тук When was the last time you got out of your comfort zone? Ages ago? Don’t worry, it is pretty much the same for me. But thanks to 11 Dutch guys, 365 Association and a pair of kangoo jumps shoes, on the 21st of November not only did I make a breakthrough but I set off towards the stars… almost literally. How did Private Kangoo Jump Tour begin? Well, accidentally of course. But we all know what they say, the best things happen to you when you least expect them. What happened during the first Private Kangoo Jump Tour? So when our Private Tours coordinator Dessi told me that I had to make a tour with a pair of kangoo jumps shoes, I told her: “You gotta be kidding me!” After a couple of images on Google and some videos on youtube, I was totally hopeless for the initiative and headed towards the meeting point with the absolute certainty that I would either fall down and break something, […]
